Lithium Battery Industry Keeps Going

If you open up your mobile phone or laptop or iPad, you'll find a lithium battery. If you own a hybrid or electric car, it's likely powered by a lithium Acer laptop batteries as well. Lithium is a metal that's light and cheap, and it is increasingly the material of choice for battery makers.

Lithium could, in the future, replace a lot of the oil we now use for energy — which raises questions about how much we can realistically rely on the metal. Seth Fletcher, senior editor at Popular Science, explores this in a new book, called Bottled Lightning: Superbatteries, Electric Cars and the New Lithium Economy.

Lithium Logistics

"You have to store metallic lithium in oil, otherwise it tarnishes," Fletcher explains to NPR's Steve Inskeep. "Actually, it's so volatile it doesn't exist in nature in its pure form. So if you're mining for lithium, you never find big arm-sized veins of lithium metal because they just don't exist."

Most of the world's lithium, Fletcher says, comes from a series of salt lakes in a high-altitude region where Bolivia, Chile and Argentina meet. It's called the "lithium triangle."

"Over the years, the water has absorbed minerals and settled in these giant salt sponges, and now there's this rich brine," he says.

When the water evaporates, it leaves behind an olive oil-like substance that has a small percentage of lithium, which is then processed into lithium carbonate, a white powder. And according to Fletcher, there's more than enough to meet the rising demand.

"I don't know of any serious person in the automotive industry or in the lithium industry who believed that there is a serious, long-term supply problem," he says. "In fact, for the next 10 years there will probably be an oversupply of lithium because so many companies have now moved into the market."

And unlike the impact of mining other natural resources, concentrating lithium is an "environmentally benign" process, Fletcher says. "It's about as low-impact as mining can get. They're really just pumping water up ... and there are really no toxic chemicals in a lithium-ion Toshiba laptop battery."

'A Gaping Hole In The Grid'

Using lithium Dell batteries can also boost the efficiency of how we store energy — say, from a wind farm or a bank of solar cells, Fletcher says.

"What a lot of companies are working on right now is building gigantic banks of lithium-ion batteries that can store energy from power plants," he says. "Right now we don't store energy effectively at all. That's a big gaping hole in the grid right now."

A limiting factor to the batteries, however, is the amount they can store and how quickly they can be recharged. While companies work to produce better lithium batteries, Fletcher argues, people should take advantage of the current uses.

"Batteries are going to get better, but we don't have a battery that can power a car for 500 miles and then recharge in 15 minutes," he says. "It's going to be a long time before we have that battery, but the batteries we do have right now can do a lot of incredibly useful things, and they can do them very efficiently and affordably. I think we would be wise to use them to do those things while we're simultaneously developing future chemistries that maybe could power a car 500 miles and recharge in 15 minutes."

Toyota Adopts Tesla Laptop & laptop battery Strategy for Electric Cars

Toyota Motor Corp., Daimler AG and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG are turning to laptops for a cheaper way to power their electric cars -- and their sales.

Automakers are testing packs of lithium-ion batteries assembled by Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors Inc. costing less than bigger, car-only batteries favored by General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. A pack of 6,831 cylinder-shaped cells made by Panasonic Corp. powers Tesla's $109,000 Roadster sports car for up to 245 miles per charge.

The car industry will help lithium-ion battery makers more than triple sales to 5 trillion yen ($60 billion) in a decade from 1.5 trillion yen in the year ending in March, according to Sanyo Electric Co., the world's biggest maker of the dell inspiron 1300 battery batteries. Rechargeable consumer-electronics batteries benefit from an economy of scale that may help cut manufacturing costs and sticker prices in the nascent electric-car industry, said Koji Endo, a Tokyo-based analyst at Advanced Research Japan.

"It may lead to the total component cost of an electric car getting lower than that of a gasoline car," Endo said. "As the cost lowers, there'll be more likelihood that retail prices of electric cars will drop."

Factories making small cells are running at high capacity, Eberhard said. That also benefits EV makers who don't have the resources to develop their own batteries, said Menahem Anderman, president of Advanced Automotive Batteries, a consulting firm in Oregon House, California.

GM partners with South Korea's LG Chem Ltd. for the Volt pack, and Nissan partners with NEC Corp., Japan's biggest personal-computer maker, for the Leaf.

Toyota, the world's largest automaker, is working with Tesla on the electric RAV4, while its plug-in Prius hybrid and a small, electric car planned for 2012 employ larger batteries.

"When the customer decides ‘This is the car I want,' we want to be that full-line maker who has the answer for that customer," Toyota President Akio Toyoda said. "By using both car batteries and laptop batteries, we are able to provide customers with a wider variety of choice."

The alliances with Toyota and Daimler helped Tesla generate an initial public offering in June that raised about $226 million.

Battery Recalls

Tesla's shares have surged more than 80 percent this year, compared with an 11 percent increase in the Russell 1000 Index, even though the company has delivered fewer than 1,500 Roadsters since 2008.

Shares of Toyota have fallen 15 percent this year, more than a 3 percent decline by Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average.

Lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics have a history of recalls because of overheating that can cause a fire. Nokia Oyj, the world's largest mobile-phone maker, offered in 2007 to replace as many as 46 million Panasonic phone batteries.

Panasonic now uses an insulator film between electrodes to limit the risk of overheating, said Yuji Tsuzaki, a spokesman for the battery unit.

"I've never been found wanting on the batteries," said Painter, chief executive officer of Truecar Inc., an automotive- sales data-marketing company in Santa Monica, California. "I step on the pedal and it goes like a bat out of hell."

So Many Electronic Cigarettes, So Little Time

Since their creation in 2004 by inventor Hon Lik, electronic cigarettes, or personal vaporizers as the users like to call them, have spread like wildfire through the smoking community.

When they first arrived on the market, there was pretty much one model that resembled an actual cigarette in size, color and design.  Over the past 7 years, the industry has grown exponentially and a melting pot of new designs and options has exploded onto the marketplace.

For someone new to the vaping experience, a common problem is information overload.  There are so many options now that it's nearly impossible to find a suitable model without some sort of guidance. There are quite a few forums out there, e-cigarette-forum.com being the best in my opinion, but even with user guidance there are so many conflicting opinions that it can be just as confusing.

Before looking for your first electronic cigarette, you need to understand some basic terms.

1. Battery – the battery makes up the majority of the length of an e-cigarette.  It supplies power to the atomizer/cartomizer either through suction (as in automatic/auto batteries) or with the push of a small button (as in manual batteries) The batteries are lithium-ion batteries and can be charged about 300 times before they need replacing.
2. Atomizer – the atomizer is a small heating element that is activated when the battery is heated. The atomizer then heats a liquid until it vaporizes giving the illusion and feeling of smoke. Atomizers are a consumable item and will die out over time so you always want extras.
3. Cartridge – the cartridge is a small cap containing a fibrous material generally referred to as "polyfill' that is saturated by the liquid and wicks it onto the atomizer. Cartridges can be refilled repeatedly and can be washed as needed.
4. Cartomizer – the cartomizer is combination of an atomizer and cartridge.  It is a single piece that screws onto the battery.  Cartomizers are disposable, but can be refilled numerous times before they are no longer useable. They generally hold considerably more liquid than a standard cartridge and require less maintenance.
5. Liquid – also known as ejuice or eliquid is a solution based in propylene glycol (PG) and/or vegetable glycerin (VG).  Both bases are listed as GRAS by the FDA and considered safe for human consumption. The liquids can be purchased in most any flavor imaginable and can be mixed to your desired nicotine strength or without nicotine.
6. Model – the model refers to the threading of the female and male parts of the battery and atomizer/cartomizer.  There are many models and most are not interchangeable. 

So the question now becomes where to start.  I recommend first choosing a model as there are generally numerous vendors that carry them. The following are some suggestions to look into:

The 510/306 – The 510 model is sold under numerous brand names, but most reputable vendors list the model as well to avoid confusion.  The 510 is the most popular and widely used model on the market currently. The basic 510 starter kits are relatively inexpensive ($25-50 on average) and the cigarette style batteries are sufficient for lighter smokers (up to ½ pack per day).  

For heavier smokers, there are many "fat batts" on the market that are compatible with 510 atomizers and cartomizers.  These batteries are usually larger; about the size of a cigar, but have a considerably longer life and require less frequent charges. 

510 models are very versatile and can be used with 510 or 306 model atomizers, cartridges or cartomziers and have many different battery style choices.

The 808/901 – The KR808D-1 (808) model is a close second to the 510 in popularity and availability. The 808 models are sold with cartomizers but are compatible with 901 atomizers and cartridges as well.

The 808 batteries come in a few different lengths.  The general rule is that the longer the battery is, the longer it lasts between charges. They usually come in shorties/minis (lasting around 1 1/2hrs), regular (2-3hrs) and XL (4-6hrs).

There are a couple of companies that sell a "fat batt" option for the 808 models, but most starter kits come with standard batteries.

The 4081 – The 4081 is probably the most commercial model on the market.  It is what is sold by a lot of "free trial" companies and is marketed in convenience stores, gas stations and malls.  Although there is nothing inherently wrong with the 4081, it is a proprietary model.  They generally only have standard batteries, tend to be overpriced, and not very satisfying to anyone who smokes over a ¼ to ½ pack per day. It is sold either with an atomizer and cartridges or with cartomizers (which are generally harder to refill than other models' cartomizers)

Do your research to determine which model seems to best suit your smoking habit and then visit some forums to get an idea of which vendors are the best to order from.

Whatever you do, avoid "free trials".  Many a new vaper has been stung by the free trial scams.  Wherever you do choose to purchase from, a *basic starter kit should never cost over $50 and you should not be required to sign up for any subscriptions for refills.  Buying liquid by the bottle and refilling your own cartridges is the most cost effective method.

Above all, don't give up.  The benefits of using electronic cigarettes far outweigh the frustrations they can provide.  Most users purchase a couple different electronic cigarette models before they find the one that suits them the best and finding the right liquid can be a challenge also, so if you're struggling with it, just try to stick with it.  It will pay off in the end.
